WR Metallurgical

Services Offered:

I offer metallurgical services to Fabricators and Manufacturers of Boilers and Pressure Vessels, and suppliers of Heat Treatment Services.

I specialize in Process Metallurgy, specifically in forming processes for plate, tube and pipe, and in the heat treatment of both raw material and fabricated welded assemblies using either furnaces or local heating.

I also offer assistance in the qualification of new, raw material suppliers, or sub-let fabrication vendors.

John Hainsworth

Metallurgical Consultant

Since graduation in 1969, with an Honors degree in Metallurgy from Sheffield Polytechnic in the UK, I have worked for over 50 years in the steel fabrication industry.

For 35 of those years, I worked for Babcock & Wilcox, a leading Manufacturer of Boilers and Pressure Vessels.  During those years, I spent 12 years in the Nuclear field working on the fabrication and heat treatment of heavy section plate, pipe and forgings, and over 25 years in the selection, fabrication and heat treatment of materials and components for fossil fired boilers for steam and power generation.

I have spent many years auditing and qualifying raw material vendors of plate, pipe, tube, forgings and castings of ASME Section II materials, and sub-let fabricators of ASME Section I components, both domestic and overseas.

For over 35 years, I have served on a number of committees of the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Standards, the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Committee and the AWS D10P committee.I am presently a member of the B31.1 Power Piping Committee, the B31 Fabrication and Examination Technical Committee, the B31.1 Subgroup on Fabrication & Examination, the B&PV Section I Subgroup Fabrication & Examination, and the AWS 10P Subcommittee on Local Heat Treating of Pipework. I am a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

When I finally retired from Babcock & Wilcox, in November of 2009 with 35 years of service, I was employed as a Technical Consultant responsible for the identification and implementation of improvements in manufacturing forming processes, and in heat treatment methodology and processes.  I directed research and development into those processes, to improve our fabrication capabilities, and our product's competitiveness in the marketplace.  I also organized the technology transfer of those developments and the identification and training of personnel within our Manufacturing Divisions.
